Washington State EALR Guidelines

If you're a teacher, we know you're very familiar with Washington State Learning Standards! We also understand how important it is that any new curriculum or suggested additions to curriculum be tied to the state's standards. Jump$tart Washington does not profess to be the state standards expert, so we've gone to the source and provided a link: http://www.k12.wa.us/CurriculumInstruct/learningstandards.aspx.

Washington Learning Goals (from OSPI web site)

  1. Read with comprehension, write with skill, and communicate effectively and responsibly in a variety of ways and setting.
  2. Know and apply the core concepts and principles of mathematics; social, physical, and life sciences; civics and history; geography; arts; and health and fitness.
  3. Think analytically, logically, and creatively, and integrate experience and knowledge to form reasoned judgments and solve problems. Understand the importance of work and how performance, effort, and decisions directly affect future career and educational opportunities.

We believe that these learning goals tie directly to financial literacy concepts.

  1. Students, as well as adults, need to comprehend money concepts and be able to communicate about them.
  2. Mathematics is the most direct correlation to financial topics. Yet social sciences can also be impacted by money issues.
  3. Thinking analytically and logically about money allows students to gain positive experiences so there will be fewer problems to solve.
  4. We all get money from work. Education costs money. Students and adults must perform well at school and at work to succeed. If you’re going to spend and earn money, it’s just as important that you understand what to do with it.
